VIDEO: Messi's disastrous performance against Dortmund

Barcelona fans finally got a glimpse of Lionel Messi in the club's shirt as the Argentine came on as a second-half substitute against Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Champions League group stage tie on Tuesday. The Barca skipper's performance, however, was far from convincing which clearly indicated the match sharpness he has been lacking. A little more than half an hour's play was all Messi got at Westfalenstadion and it was enough for fans to brand his performance as a disaster.

It was the first outing of the season for Messi who has missed as many as 4 of Barcelona's La Liga matches. In his absence, the defending champions have only won two of those matches while losing one and drawing one. Against a challenging team like Dortmund in the Champions League, many expected the Argentine to step up and deliver but the hosts dealt with the 'Messi threat' rather easily.

Be it passing, dribbling or even shooting, Messi looked at his worst as Dortmund defence effectively stopped him from getting into the penalty box time and time again. His passes were intercepted with precision and he was dispossessed rather easily. A video compilation featuring Messi's 'disaster class' was shared on social media and it has got fans talking.

Messi was out of action for a period of sixes weeks, battling a calf injury, but finally came on as a 59th-minute substitute for Ansu Fati, the teenager who achieved the feat of becoming the youngest ever player to feature for the in Europe.

A Champions League goalscoring record was also on the brink of being broken but Messi failed to find the back of the net. The Argentine forward presently sits on 112 goals in 136 appearances in Europe's elite club competition and a goal against BVB would've taken him level with former Real Madrid star Raul's tally of scoring against 33 different sides in the tournament.

Messi presently sits on 32, having faced a total of 37 teams so far. Messi's arch-rival Ronaldo also sits on the same tally but he wouldn't be able to increase it against Atletico Madrid, having already scored for the Spanish club, both with Real Madrid and Juventus.
